San Jose is a little more crowded (the town is much bigger and number of resorts and HOTELS are more) but the beaches are a bit better in terms of surf, swimming and snorkeling – I think so anyway.
Cabo’s downtown is much smaller but is the more popular and renowned “hot spot” in terms of wild (not good for kids) clubs (Cabo Wabo, Billygans Beach Club and El Squid Roe) but there are plenty of good restaurants for the whole family. I recommend the Crazy Lobster. There are many more – I cant list them all.
The beach is a bit more crowded (about 3 miles in length from harbor to large rocks at the end of Medano Beach) and the strip of beach from the harbor down for about a mile is really calm but kind of boring for surf (waves) fun but great for launching the rental jet skiis, catching water taxis out to the famous rock formations like the arch and Lover’s Beach and just jumping in and out to cool off. Oh and this strip of beach is a bit crowded becase there are several beach restaurants and resorts side by side right on the shore.
Resorts are relatively the same in both locations. The newer and the larger the better they are. San Jose definitely has more older hotels but has new resorts too. Resorts are the way to go in Mexico for families because they are newer (nice amenities) larger and are more family friendly mostly because of the giant swimming pools and restaurants and services like spas and gyms that are on the premises. The quitest least crowded resorts (I think) are actually the ones in between the two towns along what is known as the hotel corridor.
I’ve been to Cabo many times but have heard much about San Jose and everyone that goes to Cabo or San Jose kind of has to see a bit of San Jose because that’s is where the airport is. I have never actually stayed in San Jose.
Hurricanes are rare but have happened. Cabo has experienced pacific tropical storms than hurricanes and they dont nearly pack the “punch” that actual hurricanes do like on the OTHER SIDE of the country where Cancun and Belize are. That is the Carribean side. Right now Cabo is HOT (like 95 to 100 degrees!) there was a storm earlier last week July 20, 2009 (I think) but it has passed and there was only a bit of rain and thunder.
I’m married with two teenage daughters and we are in fact leaving TOMORROW (July 30th!) for Cabo along with a friend and her daughter. We are looking forward to a great time.
GOOD LUCK!!
Hola. I live in SJD and can break it down for you. SJD is the quieter, quainter side of Los Cabos. All the resorts are on the same stretch of beach, and its a 5 minute walk into the town. I love it here. It is safe and clean and the beach goes forever. All the resorts are 5 star and wonderful. No crowds. You can find your own little piece of sand.
In Cabo San Lucas, it is noisy, party atmosphere for most of the year but don’t exclude it. It is worth making a trip to for a day – especially if you want to swim with dolphins or want to do something special that your resort doesn’t offer.
We get alot of storms from June-October here in Cabo. Most just sweep by and are hardly noticible. Just alot of rain. Then there is the odd hurricane. So far we have been lucky. Its hard to predict. They said this year may be bad, but it hasn’t yet. Hurricanes are just a fact of life down here. All the resorts have contingency plans and you will be very safe…any category 5s they will let you know ahead of time so you can decide to fly out.
See you down here!
